Today, April 27th, Bill Williams and I were on hand for the 1,000th bird of
the season at the College Creek Hawkwatch, on the James River, near
Williamsburg, sponsored by Coastal VA Wildlife Observatory. Not surprisingly,
the bird was a Turkey Vulture, part of a group of 16 Turkey Vultures, which
were part of a group of 25 hawks, Bald Eagles and vultures.
The season total stands at 1053, the second highest in 7 years. Last year's
total was 1024. The highest was in 1997 at1368. There are probably 20 days
left for the season, so a new season record is a possibility.
