The late winter/spring hawkwatch, on the James River, sponsored by Coastal VA
Wildlife Observatory, logged more days (71) and hours (127) that in any of
the previous 6 seasons. As a result, there were more birds recorded, too, 1414,
of 14 species, from February 9 to June 6. The birds per hour average was 11.
I did 4 days in June, looking unsuccessfully for Mississippi Kites, but was
rewarded with some nice Bald Eagle flights. The expanded May coverage also
helped produce a record number of Bald Eagles, since they tend to be late
movers.
Other species with new season highs were Osprey, Cooper's Hawk, Sharp-shinned
Hawk, Broad-winged Hawk, Red-tailed Hawk, American Kestrel and Peregrine. A
Golden Eagle on April 14th was a great highlight, as were the 8 White Pelicans
on April 22.
Special thanks to volunteers Tom Armour and Bill Williams.
