Good evening,
Just north of Charlottesville, in Albemarle County, you will find a beautiful
county park that covers about 120 acres of land with a 62 acre lake. I've
included a couple of web pages that describe the park and give you directions.

The area below the dam is an excellent birding site with several different
types of habitats. Open field, stream, forest, and forest edge.
While birding there today, Gale and I saw the following birds:
Red Tailed Hawk
Turkey Vultures
Black Vultures
American Crows
Canada Geese
Eastern Flycatcher, several catching flying insects from the top of the dam.
Tree Swallows, swooping over the dam and the nesting boxes. You could often
see them perching along the guard rails along the top of the dam.
Gray Cat Bird
Prairie Warbler, a beautiful male with the chestnut markings on his back. He
danced in the secondary growth at the edge of the field for at least ten
minutes. Beautiful!
Spotted Sandpipers, along the stream and in the open fields. Their were
numerous puddles in the fields due to the recent rains.
Cardinals
There is a nice boat dock, swimming beach, and several picnic areas around the
lake as well. I highly recommend a blanket, picnic basket, cooler, binoculars,
etc. The park does not charge fees till Memorial Day weekend.
Regards,
Jim and Gale
