The chipping sparrows are beginning to amass here. The highest visual count
so far this year is 26. Last year the high was 51. I was just doing a quick
scan with the binoculars out the window(Blue-Gray Knatcher2, Brown Thrasher2,
RSTowhee1, Purple Finch8, Pileated Woodpecker1, Goldfinches 18, Palm Warbler1,
Juncos6, Tree Swallows2, and just started counting the chipping sparrows-8, 9,
10-- when there was mass confusion in the binocular lenses. Looking up, the
resident Sharp Shinned Hawk just screeched in from behind a group of pines and
nailed chipping sparrow#10. He flew with the sparrow to the top of the suet
feeder post and sat there for a minute and them flew off. It'll be intersting
to
see if the birds stay away from the suet feeder post for awhile-if they can
smell or sense what just happened there. SO much for that idea. In less than 2
min. the birds are back, and a Goldfinch just landed on the post and was
bullied off by a Purple Finch. I guess the lesson is life goes on. Lets see,
