A weekend trip sponsored by ANS and led by Paul Dumont took in Chincoteague NWR
and nearby Shad Landing State Park (Maryland) on Saturday 4/27 and Great Dismal
Swamp on Sunday 4/28. With a few unscheduled interruptions to the birding, the
four participants netted nearly 100 species. The following are my numbers and
sightings--Paul's numbers would be higher. Highlights:
-brief binocular looks at Swainson's Warbler at Dismal Swamp next to the
trail--success finally after hearing at least 8 different ones, often just
behind the undergrowth!
-8 Black-necked Stilt on the causeway to Chincoteague Island--2 pairs at one
spot and 2 more pairs farther down the road immediately following; very
unlikely they were the same ones. These have been rare at Chincoteague and
only a few records of breeding; perhaps this is about to change.
At Chincoteague:
Oystercatcher - 4
BLACK-NECKED STILT - 8, in pairs
Dunlin - lots
Wimbrel - 2
Willet - lots
Glossy Ibis - lots
Osprey - 5
Semipalmated Plover - 20+
Seaside Sparrow - 3-4
other usual suspects
At Shad Landing State Park:
Red and White-eyed Vireo
Gr-crested Flycatcher
Wood Thrush - 2
Baltimore Oriole
Yellow-throated Warbler - 2 seen well, more heard
Black-and-White Warbler
Worm-eating Warbler - 4
Ovenbird - 4 seen, heard too many to count
Pine Warbler - creeping along the trunk of a large old pine picking out
moths or white flakes of something
Prothonotary Warbler
Yellow Warbler
Indigo Bunting
etc.
At Great Dismal Swamp:
Yellow-billed Cuckoo
Ruby-thr Hummingbird
Great-crested Flycatcher - lots
Acadian Flycatcher
Red, White, and Yellow Vireo
Prothonotary Warbler - all the trails rang with their song. One gorgeous
male came into the pavilion to investigate our lunch, and sang for us before
flying away.
Yellow-rumped Warbler - 4
SWAINSON'S WARBLER - at least 8 heard (Paul counted a dozen), one
cooperated for a look
Prairie Warbler - 8 +
Ovenbird - 8+
Louisiana Waterthrush - one heard just before hearing our first
Swainson's--it was interesting comparing the similarity of their songs
Yellowthroat
Hooded Warbler - both male and female seen
