Hi all,
A friend from New York was at Chincoteague on last Thursday and Friday and
sends the following notes:
"We were shocked by near-total lack of chickadees. Just a few one morning on
the Snow
Goose Pond loop right at the entrance. A Clay-colored Sparrow was with the
Savannahs on the outer beach. A Common Yellowthroat on the Snow Goose pond
loop. From only one relatively short (30-minute) visit to the beach, Northern
Gannets were in close to the beach foraging - brilliant looks, not the usual
distant, heat-shimmery distorted views I'm used to. No WW Scoters, but
expected
numbers of Black and Surf. Mostly RT Loons, hardly any Commons. Snow Goose
Pond was full of water and teeming with life! Tons of GW Teal, shovelers,
pintail, black ducks, geese (didn't pick out any Ross's),
etc. Tundra Swans were in the dozens. The Wash flats were (comparatively)
dead and uneventful -- only 1 Killdeer, one Lesser Yellowlegs . . . all numbers
seemed to be down. No Peregrines, Merlins, or Cooper's, a couple Sharpies
and several Bald Eagles.
