VA Birders,
I just returned from 3.5 days at Chincoteague on a family vacation. I
checked the mudflats east of the bridge over Queens Sound at low tide on
Sat, Sun, and Mon but didn't find the Elegant Tern. The oyster beds
west of Queens Sound held 45 oystercatchers on Sunday morning. A nice
bird to show those with me who aren't into birds! I walked the beach on
Assateague south from the end of the parking lot on both Saturday and
Sunday afternoon but found no Piping Plovers either day. Many, many
Sanderlings foraged on the beach with some still sporting a bit of red.
I noticed the Purple Martin population starting to build up in the area
along the back side of the wildlife loop but there were no shorebirds
and very few herons in Snow Goose pool. Swan Cove was equally devoid of
birds.
