Yesterday, Sunday the 18th of June, I joined two other birders from
Gloucester for a trip to Chincoteague NWR and the barrier islands out of
Wachapreague (Cedar, Parramore).
I started the day by tracking down a HOUSE WREN that I heard on Friday,
which is apparently nesting down along the York River on the VIMS campus.
This was new for me, but I suppose not too unusual. I also watched a
Red-bellied Woodpecker feeding young nearby.
We arrived at Chincoteague at 9 am and departed around 12:30. We visited
the Marsh Trail and a short section of the Wildlife Loop, stopped and
scanned the marshes from the road, and walked the Woodland Trail. We didn't
turn up anything spectacular, but it was a good morning. We then went down
to Wachapreague and out on a skiff to the barrier islands, Cedar and
Parramore. We added a few species here, including GULL-BILLED TERNS (2),
and a juvenile BALD EAGLE. We also caught some sandbar sharks, which was a
bonus.
