VA Birders,
When I posted our NVBC weekend trip report last night, I forgot to
mention some geese and swan sightings. At Chincoteague, we had many Tundra
Swans at Swan Cove, mostly sitting on the ice. We also had some excellent
views of Brant in a small area of open water on the north side of the bridge
between the town of Chincoteague and the refuge. They were as close as any I
can remember. We only saw a few Snow Geese in Chincoteague, but Sunday
morning, when we drove down Rt. 13, we saw a large field which was packed
with thousands of Snow Geese, including at least a few of the Blue phase. We
stopped briefly on the shoulder and scanned the flock as best we could, but
we did not detect any Ross's Geese there.
Also, as mentioned by other observers, we had a huge raft of scaup at the
CBBT. We thought it was a mixed flock of Greater and Lesser Scaup, but we
would agree with other observers that it probably consisted mostly of Lessers.
