Greetings. Between the snow squalls of yesterday afternoon and 0935 today,
March 9, the Eagles nesting along Assateague Channel on CNWRefuge hatched
their first egg. The nest is able to be viewed at the CNWR Visitor's Center
via live video feed between 0900 and 1600 daily. As of 1315, the chick was
doing well and appeared to be thermoregulating. The chick was observed being
fed generous portions of breast of waterfowl, coot?, by the female on two
occasions. The chick was alert, active, stood erect and had a modest
covering of down. The chick is well brooded by each adult between feedings.
The pair had been incubating three eggs. The first egg was laid on or about
Jan 29, and the spacing of eggs #2 and #3 is unclear, but said to be 5 days
between each, give or take. In any event, at 0930 one of the unhatched eggs
was no longer in the nest. Thus, the projected hatching date of the
remaining egg is uncertain.
