Greetings,
I got a late start at Phelps this morning, birding it from eight-fifteen
until ten-forty-five.  I was hoping that the change in weather might have moved

few birds, but I didn't see much evidence of it; maybe the weather wasn't so
good further north.  I birded from the Curtis Parking Area (sighting-in range,
one mile down 632 south of 651, below Sumerduck), walking to the waterfowl
impoundments and back out.  It was a beautiful day, sky a gorgeous blue, and a
sea of yellow flowers at the wetlands.  Trees are just starting to take on the
muted tones, aside from the dogwoods, sumac and such that have already changed.
Started out about 65, ended just at 80, wind was light and variable.
Black-billed Cuckoo and Yellow-bellied Flycatcher take the top-bird honors.  A
fairly strong showing of Baltimore Orioles and Scarlet Tanagers, and the most
numerous bird was White-eyed Vireo, with many singing.  It was also the first
time
this fall that I didn't seen a boatload of Pewees.  Some information about
Phelps at the end.

The hours of the sighting-in range are worth mentioning.  It is open daily
except Monday from now until March 31.  Tuesday through Saturday the range is
open at nine AM, closing at 6:30 in Sep, 4:30 Oct-Jan, and 5:30 in Feb and Mar.

When it's open, if anyone is using the range, you'll hear a few gunshots.  If
that bothers you, Saturday and Sunday mornings should be quiet until October.

The forbidden word "hunting."  Dove season is now on Wednesday and Saturday,
through 25 September, from noon until sunset.  It runs again 9 Oct-6 Nov, and
28 Dec-15 Jan, daily (except Sundays), from a half-hour before sunrise until
sunset.  Oddly, I didn't see a single dove there today, but I rarely do, at
least in this part of the WMA.  Maybe it isn't so good for hunting doves.

Bow season for deer starts 2 Oct, muzzle-loaded stuff 30 Oct, general
firearms 2 Nov.

Best,

Todd
