A few highlights from the Chesapeake Bay CBC:
1 ad. male King Eider (present all day, 3/4)
6 Common Eiders (3 f., 3 m., mostly around 3)
2 Harlequin Ducks (1 m., 1 f., mostly around 4)
2 Greater Scaup (1 m., 1 f., around 4)
32 White-winged Scoters, among 100s of Surf and 10s of Black
3 Bufflehead (not common on these islands)
84 Long-tailed Ducks (numerous juveniles)
1 Cattle Egret (crossing at dawn)
72 Turkey Vultures (crossing in afternoon)
2 Brown Pelicans (another one walking around begging on the first island)
1 American Pipit
1 American Goldfinch
Very few gulls -- only 5 Laughing, 3 Bonaparte's, no Lesser Black-backeds,
and nothing more unusual. Other misses included Forster's Tern and Common
Goldeneye (would love to get reports from the CBBT of these or other uncommon
species during count week, which continues through the 29th). A large flight
of
hundreds of Red-throated Loons overhead at dawn was stunning. Thanks to
all-day counters Paul W. Sykes, Brian L. Sullivan, Todd M. Day, John Brollini,
and
Robert L. Anderson for keeping track of bird numbers, and thanks to the many
visitors who stopped in over the day to share in enjoyment of the great
seafowling. I will post photographs of the male King Eider when they're
developed.
On island 1 of the CBBT, the imm. male King Eider continued through yesterday
as well.
