I visted the CBBT on Friday and had a wonderful day.  I found most of
the birds I was looking for.  The scoter flock is a sight to behold.
All four islands had large to huge flocks, which made picking out other
species a challenge.  Most were surfs, but there were plenty of black
scoters as well.  I saw only about a dozen white-winged.  I did have a
male of all three species in a single close-up scope view.  I wish I had
a camera with me.

Highlights were 1st winter male harlequin duck feeding with a flock of
scaup off island 4, a red-necked grebe off island 4, two horned grebes
off island 3, 3 male and one female common eiders off island 4, both
loons (lots of common, only 2 red-throated), adult lesser black-backed
gull on island 3, brant on all four islands, purple sandpiper on islands
3 and 4, lots of great cormorants (some in breeding plumage), about 6
long-tailed ducks off islands 3 and 4, and a female merlin strafing
turnstones on island 3.  The merlin was neat because she flew below me,
dodging the rocks while trying to catch the fleeing turnstones.  She
then perched on the wall about 30 feet from me.

Here is a list of selected water-type birds for the day, which includes
