The listserv postings of the past few days (Eurasian
Wigeon, both eiders, "good" gulls) prompted me to take
a day of vacation from work and try to chase a few of
them down. The bird that forced my hand was the
Black-headed Gull reported from Lynnhaven Inlet,
because that bird would be an elusive life bird for
me.

Low tide was around 7:30 a.m. so I was at Lynnhaven by
8:00. Unfortunately this was one of the windiest days
I can remember here ---a constant, bitter, cold
pounding. My virtue in getting myself to the inlet was
not rewarded, and I did not find the bird. I did see
one un-hooded Laughing Gull that was probably PO'd
that he migrated ahead of his colleagues.

I reluctantly left Lynnhaven Inlet, and birded the
CBBT islands. I did not find eiders, but did enjoy
huge numbers of RB mergansers, both loons, Horned
Grebes, one Red-necked Grebe, active Gannets, and the
expected Oldsquaw, Scaup, Scoters (all 3), and 5
Harlequin hens with one happy male. Great Cormorants
are in formal attire--- striking white patches on the
flanks, crests, and white "come hither" feathers
growing in the head and neck areas. The strangest
thing I saw all day--- as I was being blown off the
face of the planet trying to find birds in very choppy
seas, was---- a pair of Wood Ducks! A male and a
female, right there on the Atlantic side of the
islands in deep water with the scoters. I hope they
made it.

Anyway, the main point of my posting is to let other
know that the Eurasian Wigeon IS still at the back
pond at the ESVNWR (seen with numerous American
Wigeons mid-morning), and best of all, I found the
immature male King Eider at the fishing pier at
Kiptopeke! He was no more than 20 feet from land when
I spotted him-- an outstanding view! Also in those
waters were many more loons, a Common Goldeneye, Ruddy
Ducks and other expected waterfowl.

Yes, even in bitter cold windy weather, it was worth 8
hours of annual leave. Good birding to everyone---

Karen Kearney
Chesapeake, VA
