Margaret Abbott was kind enough to recently send me materials relating to
the passing in February of Charlie (Charles W.) Hacker (1914-2003),
including the details of his memorial service and an obituary from the
"Daily Press". Stalma Hacker, Charlie's wife, had sent them to Margaret.
Many of you knew him much better than I did but I would like very much to
send copies of these to anyone who requests them.
I remember Charlie from when he presided over the delightfully informal
hawk trapping operations at Kiptopeke with pipe in hand and pithy humor at
the ready. His quotation "There are two kinds of birds, hawks and hawk
food" is reminiscent of the submariners' quip "There are two kinds of
ships, submarines and targets". This is a rather appropriate quotation
given Charlie's over 40 years of association with the Newport News ship
building industry.
May Charlie rest in peace.
Best to all.-Harry Armistead, 523 E. Durham St., Philadelphia, PA
