South River Falls in the Shenandoah National Park can produce both , of
course there are no garuantees. For one thing this is a bit later than I
normally
bird this spot but it is reasonably close to C'ville. I usually bird this spot
2nd week of May. South River Falls is a very popular hike due to the extreme
beauty and a combination of lots of wildflowers, Triliums, and ladyslippers
and such .....plus it is a great migrant trap. The last two years I have had
Blackburnian's on the Appalachian Trail between the Parking lot and the
fireroad.
Along the fireroad there are lots of Ceruleans. So a good strategy might be
to park at the parking lot for South River Falls (2 miles from the Swift-Run
Gap entrance to the Park off rt 33. ) Take the trail down to the falls to begin
your hike. After about 200 yards this trial will intersect with the AT. Go
left. The Blackburnians have been seen in the Conifers along this short section
of the AT. There were not a whole lot of conifers but apparently enough to
attract the Blackburnians. If you know their song your chances will increase
considerably. After .5 of mile you will intersect with the fire road head down
hill
if you want to see the falls which are worth seeing and this also allows you
to do the complete circuit. There are some warblers down near the stream just
above the Falls (namely Canada , Louisanna W. , Worm , ). ON the otherhand if
you don't feel up to the hike (3 miles in all) turn left and head uphill at
the intersection of the fireroad and the AT. Ceruleans are all along the fire
road and if you know their song you will find them easily.
There is also a great Warbler spot at Afton but I have never tried it and
don't even know the name of the road but it has been quite productive for
several
birders in the area. Check the ABA guide for VA.
Or Claudia Wilde's book . Or put a request out on VA bird.
Good luck!
