Hello Virginia Birders,
Here is a great opportunity to participate on a pilot project to begin
systematically surveying the Upper Blue Ridge Mountains Important Bird
Area (IBA) for Cerulean Warblers. In partnership with the National Park
Service and The Nature Conservancy, we will be conducting transect
surveys for Ceruleans in Shenandoah National Park and adjacent lands in
Albemarle County for which we have access. We will use the data
collected from this effort to better assess the population status of
this declining species in the IBA and to establish a network of
permanent routes to better monitor the population in the future. No
previous survey experience is required, but you must know how to
identify Ceruleans by sight and sound and be able to hike between 2-4 km
(~1.5 - 2.5 miles) at a time. Routes will largely be located on trails
and fire roads but a few will be located off trail for those with a more
adventurous spirit. Survey dates will fall between May 19th and June
23rd.
We are holding a group training session on May 16th at 6pm in
Fishersville for volunteers (capped at 25), however, if you are
interested but cannot make this training, we can likely work something
else out. Please contact me offline if you are interested or for more
details. Space is limited so sign up now!
On another note, we are still looking for volunteers to fill 5 remaining
survey routes within Culpeper (1), Fauquier (3), and Prince William (1)
counties within the Culpeper Basin IBA. If you are interested in taking
one of these routes, please let me know off line.
Thanks so much!
Aimee
