[va-bird] Centerville area of Bedford County, May 12, 2007

This report is a little late but . . . Jim Elder, Norm Porter, Gene Sattler,
John Styrsky, Judy Wiegand, and I birded about 14 hours in the Centerville area
of Bedford County as part of the Big Spring Day conducted by the Lynchburg &
Roanoke Valley Bird Clubs last Saturday, May 12, 2007. The weather cooperated -
despite the forecast it didn't start raining on us until we had already decided
to quit around 6 P.M. Some of the highlights were: hearing five nocturnal
species (EASTERN SCREECH-OWL, GREAT HORNED OWL, BARRED OWL, CHUCK-WILL'S-WIDOW,
and WHIP-POOR-WILL); finding three new species on our territory
(CHUCK-WILL'S-WIDOW, CANADA WARBLER, and LINCOLN'S SPARROW); locating the only
LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE in the area; finding 20 species of warblers including the
CANADA WARBLER at a lower elevation than expected; and locating the single
LINCOLN'S SPARROW in mid-afternoon.

Some of the misses were: Ruddy Duck, Mallard, Green Heron, and Yellow-breasted
Chat (these four were found on the territory while scouting earlier in the
week); most raptors; bobwhite; raven;  Willow Flycatcher; Blue-headed Vireo;
and Yellow-throated Warbler.

Our complete list of 101 species follows.
