Saturday, April 16, 2005 - Kerr Lake and Southside
Non-birding spouse suggested an all-day outing although he wasn't too keen
on heading east again. It was breezy throughout the day, with more easterly
flow, and temperature finally reached 60 degrees by late afternoon.
First stop was Kerr's Lake in search of the reported PACIFIC LOON (N0T
FOUND) from last weekend. In the area off the first parking area after
crossing over the dam were at least 11 COMMON LOON, many in near full
alternate plumage.
Just east of Emporia down a side road off Rt. 730, well within the VA
border, we were stopped while I attempted to photograph a kiting adult
RED-TAILED HAWK. My husband spotted a second hawk that appeared above the
canopy. A MISSISSIPPI KITE. Judging by pics it seems to have the
chrematistics of both a juvenile and sub adult.
A short distance from here a single CATTLE EGRET was further back off the
road feeding in an open field.
Other raptors in the area included BALD EAGLE (imm.), BROAD-WINGED,
RED-SHOULDERED, and SHARP-SHINNED.
