Hello VAbirders,

I'd like to feed our resident pair of Carolina Wrens, but I've not had any
luck attracting them to suet cakes. Has anyone had any success feeding this
species?

The bird books indicate that they can fail to survive hard winters in the
northern part of their range. I wonder if that applies to the mountains of
Virginia?

IMHO, Carolina Wrens are colorful little pistols and I love having them as
year-round residents of our garden.  An extra treat is that for the last 3
seasons, they've nested on top of an upside-down pushbroom that leans
against the inside wall of our toolshed.  The shed is right outside our
backdoor, so during nesting season we get a scolding every time we go in or
out of the backdoor.

Since we back up to a woods that has a little stream running through it,
the wrens have an abundance of bugs to eat in bug season.  Even so, they
come to our feeders year round.  They'll visit seed feeders, but prefer our
suet feeders.  They prefer the Pileated feeder, a large vertical feeder,
over the upsidedown anti-Starling feeder, but will use either.  In summer I
feed "no-melt" suet, and during colder months I feed peanut suet.  I buy
both kinds from the local bird store.  They'll feed directly from the cake
but will also pick up fallen suet bits off the ground.  I've fed suet year
round for many years, so if you haven't had luck getting your birds to come
to suet yet, perhaps it's simply a matter of being patient.

Good luck!
