VA Birders,
I spent over an hour at the pond on Capeville Road on Thursday morning,
Aug. 26, during a quick trip to the lower Eastern Shore. This is the pond
where Ned Brinkley had reported some good shorebirds, including Wilson's
Phalarope. I didn't find any phalaropes, but I did see several Pectoral and
Stilt
Sandpipers, and 2 White-rumped Sandpipers there, as well as both yellowlegs and
Black-bellied and Semipalmated Plovers. Many of the sandpipers (but none of
the
plovers) seemed to be swimming in the pond! I think I've only seen a few
yellowlegs doing that before. The CBBT islands were pretty dead; Island #4 was
closed for construction. However, on the way back (south) about midday Friday,
I stopped at the scenic pullout shortly after going thru the toll booth and
saw hundreds of young Brown Pelicans sitting on a couple of sandspits off
Fisherman's Island. I also saw several Willits on the sand below the wall
there.
