Fellow Birders,
    A volunteer opportunity!!  The skills of experienced birders are needed to 
assist two technicians with data gathering and recording for the Cape Charles 
Seabird Watch from now through 20 December 2003.

    The Center for Conservation Biology of the College of William and Mary, in 
collaboration with The Nature Conservancy, the U. S. Coast Guard, and the 
Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, initiated the Cape Charles 
Seabird Watch on 9 November 2003.  The project will continue on a daily basis, 
weather permitting, until 20 December 2003.  The purpose of this initiative is 
to gather information on the volume, timing, and species composition of the 
fall movements of seabirds along the Virginia Atlantic coast.
    The watch site is the 191 foot Cape Charles lighthouse on the southern end 
of Smith Island in Northampton County on the Eastern Shore.  The lighthouse is 
easily seen from the northern terminus of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, 
immediately north of Fishermans Island.

ESSENTIAL INFORMATION:

    Departure for the 15-20 minute boat trip to Smith Island is at 6:00 a.m. 
from the William and Mary House on the Eastern Shore of Virginia National 
Wildlife Refuge.  Departure for the return trip from Smith Island to the 
mainland is at 4:00 p.m.  

    HIP WADERS, WARM, DRY CLOTHES, FOUL WEATHER APPAREL, AND FOOD AND DRINKS 
FOR THE DAY ARE A MUST.  A spotting scope is highly recommended.

    All participants MUST sign a liability waiver BEFORE departing for Smith 
Island.

    Once participants are on Smith Island they MUST stay on the lighthouse 
premises.  The project technicians are responsible for all decisions on the 
data to be posted for the day.
    Smith Island is an uninhabited barrier island.  There are no amenities!!

9:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. weekdays.  Participants will be selected on a first-call, 
first-served basis.  Please have an alternative participation date in mind in 
the event your first choice is unavailable.  The boat captain will make the 
final decision on whether a trip on a given day will be cancelled.
