Observation start time: 09:30:00 EST
Observation end time: 17:30:00 EST
Total observation time: 8 hours

Site Coordinator: Gene Sattler

Observers: Gene Sattler, Nicki Fleshman

Visitors:
Nicki Fleshman from Appomattox and Mary and Flip Gibson from Lynchburg gave
some welcome help.

Weather:
Initially overcast, with occasional weak sun starting at 12:00 EST, then
starting to clear off rapidly beginning about 15:00. Wind was NE 0-5 mph
all day, with a high of 73 degrees F.

Observations:
Wonder of wonders there were some birds down here on the Piedmont after a
week of SE/S winds, and the ridges did not hog all of the birds! A few
hundred birds were eager to move in the morning despite the overcast, but
as at Harvey's Knob, a big push started about 15:30 as the sun grew
strong. Our push lasted until 17:00 EST, and as usual the birds were on
either side of our little Piedmont ridge and not holding to it
particularly, so that we had to strain to find them out there in the
distance, sometimes at the limit of vision, though fortunately not
extremely high. A late bunch of two dozen Broadwings came through at 1810
EST nearly ready to set down. A second Mississippi Kite for the lookout
this season was nicely compared with an American Kestrel it was soaring
with at 14:20 over the ridge (Sorry for stealing your bird, Tad).
Tomorrow looks promising yet.

Double-crested Cormorant(60 + 9), R.T. Hummingbird (3), Blue Jay (6),
Monarchs (217), Dragonflies (28).
