[va-bird] Re: Canada with fish hook

I contacted a Wildlife Rehabber friend here in Roanoke who specializes in
birds for her thoughts on this matter. Below are her comments.

"The Wildlife Rescue League is a good organization - they may be in the same
boat we are, in that they are unable to pick up or capture animals due to
limited resources. If you can contain and transport the goose I should
think that WRL would help.

"That being said, it is extremely difficult to capture waterfowl. If they
can't fly, they can swim and if they can't swim, they can fly. It's tough
to get them unless they are real sick or injured.

"If you have a lot of time and patience you can set up a homemade trap -
possibly a large wire dog crate with a string tied to the door and then run
out the back of the cage. Sit a long way away and put something yummy in
the back of the cage. When the bird goes in, pull the string to close the
door then quickly cover the whole crate with a blanket.

"DGIF may have some suggestions for capture as well.

"The only other sticky point is whether this is a wild bird? Is it a banded
exotic "pet" or a wild Canada with tracking band?

"Lastly you can let them know that I would be happy to evaluate the bird and
provide assistance but the bird has to get to me somehow! And it is likely
to be easier on them and the bird to do it closer to home."
