Shorebirds appear to be returning to Cameron Run, despite a major
rearrangement of the mud flats over the winter, billed as a maintenance
project by the City of Alexandria. The creek is a major conduit for
storm water run off so vegetation and elevated areas of mud and gravel
were removed to enable the "100 year flood" to move unimpeded . Most of
the birds I saw today were at the lower end of the stream where it turns
to the south to go under the Beltway.
At about 3 PM this afternoon, there were upwards of 15 Greater and 3
Lesser Yellowlegs, 10 Killdeer, 2 or 3 Green Herons, and a first summer
Black-crowned Night Heron. The latter bird was at the most easterly
weir, standing with its feet in rushing water, in the shade of a large
rock. It later flew to a small sapling on the south bank where two
crows, who seemed to be mildly unhappy with it, made a few halfhearted
sweeps at the nonplused heron.
