Leni Friedman and I went birding at Calmes Neck on the Shenandoah. The river
is quite high and running fast. We saw a GBH flying, and a male Northern
Pintail on a rock till it took off south over the river. AS we were turning
around,
we spotted a Brown Creeper as well as Chickadees, also Mallards on an
impromptu pond in a meadow, as well as Canadian geese. A field full of Robins,
a
Kestrel on a wire (female) I think, lots of Grackles, Crows, Starlings in
trees,
as well as Vultures circling in sky.Temp was around 43 in Berryville and the
wind was up. All in all, it was a good afternoon and it will get better yet. My
yard is still full of fox sparrows, I usually have two all winter, but this
is a flock, as well as a few song sparrows and White-throats. My Phoebe is back
as well and singing. Bluebirds are checking the houses out.
I have a Pileated pair, and yesterday afternoon, Mr. P. had a tussle
with a squirrel. The squirrel was coming down the treetrunk to get peanuts from
the feeder that Mr. P. was eating. He spread his wings several times, flapping
them at the squirrel. When the squirrel came to close down the trunk of the
tree, the woodpecker struck with beak at squirrel.
Squirrel SPRANG from the tree and disappeared in the woods. I would
not want that beak to come in contact with my skin either. Score : Woodpecker
1- Squirrel - 0.
