[va-bird] California Gull, Fauquier Co.

VA Birders,

This afternoon (20 Dec.) from approximately 12:50 to 13:00, I observed a
second-winter California Gull at the Fauquier County landfill, located on the
east side of Rt. 29 just southeast of Warrenton. I first saw the bird in
flight over the active dumping area, but it eventually flew to roost on the
gravel-strewn lot just below the fill area, providing great scope views.
Details will be submitted to the Virginia Avian Records Committee. Also
present were 4 Lesser Black-backed Gulls (2 adults and 2 first-winter), 10
Great Black-backed Gulls, 150 Herring Gulls, and 700 Ring-billed Gulls.

This is the second record of California Gull from this location, the first
being on 19 Dec. 1999 (by Bob Abrams, Joan Boudreau and others during The
Plains CBC). All five records of California Gull from the Virginia Piedmont
have been from the Prince William or Fauquier County landfills (which share a
lot of individual gulls, I'm sure), all within the past three years.
