I got to the Hunting Creek/Stone Bridge area today at about 2:15 and started
scanning the mudflats below the apartment building.  About 10 minutes later
Bob Abrams came down from the bridge and told me he had the California Gull
on the river side.

Within seconds of our arrival on the bridge, Bob refound the gull and gave me
a quick course in the differences between this guy and the regulars:

The CA Gull seems to be a little more buoyant looking than the others.  It
looks like more of it's body is out of the water, and less of it's body is
making contact with the water.  It's posture is also different from the other
gulls - - when it was floating on the water, it's tail and primary tips seem
to be pointing up away from the water, while the other gulls primaries look a
little more horizontal.

Speaking of primary tips............the CA gull has dark primaries with big
white patches at the end.  These are very noticeable.  They look similar to
the wing tips on a Great Black Backed Gull, but VERY different from a Ring
Billed or Herring.

The color of the back/mantle is lighter than a Black Backed, but darker than
a Ring Billed or Herring.  It was sort of tough to notice when the gull was
all alone, but when it swam near the other gulls, the color difference was
obvious.  Subtle but obvious.

It was bigger than the Ring Billed, smaller than a Black Backed, and similar
in size to the Herring Gulls (similar, but slightly smaller than the
Herrings).

Good luck!
