I had the opportunity to visit Caledon on Saturday morning for a guided tour
of Jones pond area along the Potomac to view the large numbers of Tundra
Swans. This park is closed to the public for most of the year, for the
eagles in the spring and summer and for the Tundra Swans in the winter. Two
guided tours are done each year and about 17 people were led down to the
Potomac to see the swans. There were approximately 400 of these birds
tooting away as they slept and preened on the water and ice. It was really
quite an awesome scene to see and hear so many of these beautiful creatures.
Our guide mentioned they also do tours for school groups, so possibly a bird
club could arrange a tour too.
Additionally, there were a pair of Bald Eagles, Belted Kingfisher, Hooded
Mergansers, Bufflehead, Ruddy Ducks, Black Ducks, Mallards and Canadas.
