Hello, birders.
I had a fine day of birding on the Northern Neck
today, mostly at state owned Caledon Natural Area in
King George Co. Migrants continue to push through - I
observed BLACKPOLL WARBLER, SWAINSON'S THRUSH and
GRAY-CHEEKED/BICKNELL'S THRUSH. The latter bird
called softly but, alas, did not sing. Afterward, I
went berry picking at the Westmoreland Berry Farm
where I did some "light birding." I found a female
BLACKPOLL foraging low in bushes along the edge of the
farm field which borders the Rappahannock River.
I did a loop hike of a few miles on the southwest side
of Caledon, as the rest of the park is closed for part
of the year due to nesting eagles in the area. Except
for the area of lawn and garden near the Visitor
Center, the habitat in this part of the park is
deciduous forest. This forest includes a beautiful
climax forest of oak, beech and other large trees.
Full list for Caledon only is below. I had a similar
mix of species during my brief birding at the berry
farm.
