Here is the latest update of the spring monitoring program at the Eastern
Shore VA NWR. Banding is still somewhat slow although promises to pick in
the next while. Many of the regular migrants are in good numbers
now...Common Yellowthroat, Prairie Warbler and White-eyed Vireos are
widespread. Blue-gray Gnatcatchers are among the most abundant passerine now
although today marked our first capture for that species. A few hummingbirds
have been spotted in the last couple of days. Yellow-rumps are still around
in considerable numbers but soon all will have pushed north. An interesting
note on one of the recaptured Yellow-rumps...it was banded near Fire Island,
NY during March 1999. Further afield, at Willis Wharf near the town of
Exmore, Marbled Godwit numbers continue to decrease as Whimbrel numbers go
up. The first Black Skimmers I've seen so on the shore were present there
yesterday.
