[va-bird] CVWO Spring program on the Eastern Shore

Hi all,

Here are the latest banding results from the Eastern Shore Refuge.
Yellow-rumped (Myrtle) Warblers continue to dominate the totals thus far and
will for the nest week or ten days. The last week of March is typically when
a large dispersal occurs for this species and the banding totals in 2000 and
2001 dropped significantly following such mass movements. I have included
the recaptures to date in the banding totals below as a particular point of
interest.

As is typical, several species have arrived on the Shore in numbers after
the usual week or so lag compared to sightings on the west side of the
Chesapeake. Osprey and Eastern Phoebes are at many locations now.
The first Glossy Ibis were noted this week on the Eastern Shore and during
the very warm weather on Friday and Saturday a half dozen Purple Martins
were seen along with a single Barn Swallow. Heron/egret migration has been
slow overall but a few Great Egrets have been spotted in recent days. Of
interest in the over-wintering category was an Orange-crowned Warbler at the
Eastern Shore Refuge bunker and further north at Willis Wharf, an impressive
220 Marbled Godwits were admired on the mudflats there.
