Doug Pratt, Research Curator of Birds at the North Carolina State Museum of
Natural Sciences, will present "Illustrating Nature: Where Art Meets
Science" on Friday, February 3 at the Carolina Bird Clubs winter meeting in
Virginia Beach. The presentation, at the Ramada Plaza Resort at 57th
street, begins at 7:30PM.
A short bio is included below. Dr. Pratt will also have some of his
original art work on display.
If you do not recognize Dougs name, chances are that your fingerprints can
be found on one of his illustrations, especially if you own a copy of the
National Geographic Societys Field Guide to the Birds of North American.
It is only fitting that Dougs Yellow-breasted Chat graces pages 2 and 3 of
that guide.
Our featured speakers for the Saturday evening meeting will be Judy Fieth
and Michael Male, of Blue Earth Films (birdfilms.com). Their presentation
A Year in the Desert will show the filming at Bitter Lake NWR, New Mexico
of a bird-filled film for the refuges new visitor center. It will be based
on highlights from three seasons of filming at the refuge where the
Chihuahuan Desert meets the short grass prairie.
The pelagic trips and program previously scheduled had to be cancelled due
to low participation.

Field trip leaders are automatically registered for the entire meeting at no
charge and they are thereby eligible to attend Dr. Pratt's presentation,
other field trips, and a great Saturday night program.

H. DOUGLAS PRATT
Freelance ornithologist, artist, and photographer H. Douglas Pratt resides
in Raleigh, NC, where he is Research Curator of Birds at the North Carolina
State Museum of Natural Sciences. Born 1944 in Charlotte NC, he attended
Davidson College and Louisiana State University (Ph.D. 1979). Before
returning to North Carolina in 2005, he was for many years a Research
Associate of the LSU Museum of Natural Science. A Fellow of the American
Ornithologists' Union, he studies island birds of the tropical Pacific, with
special emphasis on Hawaiian honeycreepers, and his scientific papers have
been published in many journals. Though having no formal art training, Dr.
Pratt is also renowned as a zoological illustrator. He is author and/or
illustrator of 11 full-length books and a contributor to others ranging from
the National Geographic Society's Field Guide to the Birds of North America
to A Field Guide to the Birds of Hawaii and the Tropical Pacific, Mayr and
Diamonds Birds of Northern Melanesia, the multi-volume Handbook of Birds
of the World, and his recently-published (2005) and most important work,
The Hawaiian Honeycreepers: Drepanidinae, in the Oxford University Press
series Bird Families of the World.
