Taking advantage of a day off for spring break, I headed eastward with plans
to bird Craney Island. Arrived by 9:30 and was informed Craney was closed
for the next two weeks to birders.
I then decided to head up the CBBT. Weather was near picture perfect with
relatively calm seas, mild temps and sunshine.
Highlights: (NO Harlequin; NO Eider, not even the reported one at Kiptopeke)
Harbor Seal - three on Island 3; two put on quite a show, submerging and
then leaping upwards, making quite a splash near the rocks. They eventually
came ashore to bask in the sunshine.
American Oystercatcher - several pairs along Islands 3 and 4
Porpoise (vs. Dolphin) - only saw dark (almost blackish) backs and dorsal
fins that seemed small and triangular-shaped. Several pods moving northward
along bay side of the islands.
Red-necked Grebe - one on north end of Island 3 (photographed).
Red-throated Loon - I don't recall seeing so many. In fact, they easily
outnumbered Common 5 to 1.
Red-breasted Merganser - numerous
Brown Pelican - several small flocks moving northward
Spring peeps peeping at Kiptopeke.
