I, like many others apparently, probably will not visit the islands of the
CBBT to go birding again unless the plan is altered. I simply cannot afford
it. I also concur with a previous post that the best thing about the bridge
was the accessibility... the "casual" (I use the word hesitantly, as the
toll alone limits me and I live a good ways away) visits often turned up
the neatest birds. No more Friday afternoon decisions to hit the tunnel
early on Saturday.
That said, perhaps this will force us to organize more as a community
interested in birding this special place. If we can dilute the cost of the
escort with numbers, perhaps it will be more workable. This would be
helpful during times when we could plan and "rely" on seeing good birds,
but would of course do nothing to resolve the elimination of the more
frequent, casual visits.
Finally, I think that the simple advertisements I regularly see in birding
magazines I receive should be altered in light of this decision. Those ads
make the CBBT islands sound easily accessed. Perhaps the CBBT folks
involved will make this change on their own, but if they do now I will
certainly alert the magazines to the change (if they don't hear about it
anyway).
