I just returned from seeing and hearing an adult male CALIFORNIA QUAIL in
Spotsylvania County. The quail was seen perched atop and calling from a wood
pile. Although the origin of this bird is uncertain, this is a great bird to
see in the eastern US. This is definitely a first state record and possibly a
first for the eastern US. The homeowner who originally found and photographed
this bird late yesterday evening and saw it again this morning beneath his
feeders is an avid birder who recently moved here from Tennessee. Since he
does not know how his new neighbors would react to lots of birders in the area,
he ask that you call him to determine if it is OK to go look for the bird. Mr
Ernst Holzhausen (the birder who found this bird) can be reached at
540-710-6985. Please use good judgment when calling Ernst and his family by
not calling early in the AM (before 8:00) or late in the evening (after 9:00).
If it's ok to go see the bird, Ernst will give you directions. Pleas
e do not share the directions unless Ernst gives his permission to do so.
Does anyone out there know if anyone keeps these quail and/or releases them for
hunting anywhere near Spotsylvania?
Good Birding,
Mike Boatwright--
