VA Birders,
Larry Meade and I with six others from the Northern Virginia Bird Club
enjoyed the concentration of waterfowl on the Potomac from the
shoreline and fishing pier at Leesylvania State Park in Prince William
County this morning. Two singles of their species were our highlight
birds and lifers for some in the group--a Common Goldeneye which landed
in the river while a few of us were watching, and a Redhead spotted
amidst a milling raft of feeding scaup and Canvasbacks near the fishing
pier. We found a few songbirds in the picnic area, including a Hermit
Thrush and a couple of Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers. Numbers were
difficult to estimate for the enormous rafts of ducks because of sun
glare and shimmer, so these numbers are the "best guess" consensus of
the group.
