Hello Va-Birders,
Sunday afternoon April 6 was a beautiful
afternoon and Burke Lake was full of fishermen in
boats, but that didn't scare away the grebes.
Here are the totals:
28 Red-necked Grebe (only one in excellent
breeding plumage)
4 Horned Grebes (one in excellent breeding
plumage right next to the fish pier among fishing
bobbers and coots)
3 Pied-billed Grebes
3 Common Loon (excellent breeding plumage)
42 Double-crested Cormorant (some were perched in
trees preening--an odd sight, most were fishing,
some had wonderful fluffy crests and intense
day-glow turquoise eyes)
7 Bonaparte's Gulls (the first time I have seen
them at Burke Lake, one was in breeding plumage)
4 American Coots
69 Ruddy Ducks
1 pair Common Merganser
11 red-breasted merganser (2 breeding plumage
males)
Also present, Canada Geese, Mallards, Great Blue
Herons (3).
I also checked out three of the other large lakes
in the Burke area hoping for more red-necked
grebes, but found none. Instead, here is what I
found.
Royal Lake: Canada Geese, Mallards, 1 Great Blue
Lake Braddock: Canada Geese, Mallards, 1
Pied-billed Grebe, 1 Barn Swallow, 1 great blue
heron
Woodglen Lake: Canada Geese, Mallards, 2 male
Lesser Scaup, 1 Great Blue Heron, 7 northern
rough-winged swallows, 1 eastern phoebe
