HOWDY!
From 7:15 to 9:15 this morning I visited Burke
Lake between the boat ramp parking lot and the
dam.  It was a spectacularly gorgeous morning
with a wonderfully brisk wind.  Here is what I
saw.
3 great blue heron fishing
1 turkey vulture, flying over, NE of lake
9 wood duck repeatedly disturbed by people in
boats
23 mallards, not disturbed by people in boats
2 Canada geese flying over
1 osprey fishing
1 sharp-shinned hawk flying SW
2 cooper's hawks flying SW
3 red-shouldered hawks, residents, circling and
perching
8 broad-winged hawks flying S
1 caspian tern flying SE
1 rock pigeon flying in for a drink along the
shore
1 mourning dove flying SE
65 chimney swifts flying as if feeding but mostly
heading SW
1 hummingbird
1 belted kingfisher perched
1 red-headed woodpecker flying SE
7 red-bellied woodpecker
11 flicker flying SW across lake
2 downy woodpeckers calling
1 pileated woodpecker calling
1 eastern kingbird flying NE
2 red-eyed vireo near parking lot
66 blue jay, mostly flying SW across lake
4 american crow
5 tree swallow feeding over lake
1 barn swallow flying SE
4 carolina chickadee
8 tufted titmice eating beech nuts
1 white breasted nuthatch heard
7 carolina wren agitated by my screech owl call
1 house wren skulking in grass at bottom of dam
(had my first ruby-crowned kinglet of the season
yesterday at Flint Hill in Oakton)
2 robin flying S
1 unidentified thrush zipped through forest
1 catbird in lake-shore thicket
2 starling flying N
30+/- cedar waxwing flying SW
4 magnolia warbler in sunny spot sheltered from
wind with chickadees near parking lot
1 pine warbler same location
3 black-and-white warblers same location
1 black-throated blue warbler below dam
3 yellowthroats below dam
3 unidentified warblers flying overhead chipping
1 field sparrow lake shore thicket (surprising
location to me)
2 song sparrow behind dam
4 cardinal, still feeding fledglings
2 bobolink flying SW
15 cowbird flying SW
2 grackle flying S
1 goldfinch flying SW
3 house finch perched in top of oak

PS the oakton elementary school roost on route
123 is still very active.  Last night it had over
1700 birds.
