Around 2:30 this afternoon I decided to visit Burke
Lake and see what waterfowl were present. The
temperature was a brisk 39 degrees, but the wind-chill
made it seem more like 29. Sightings were the
following:
Observation Platform near Dam
25 Common Mergansers (17 F, 8 M)
2 Buffleheads (very nice iridescence on the head)
~100 Ring-Necked Ducks (there may have been Scaup
interspersed among them, but I couldn't tell, as my
scope gets fuzzy after 40X zoom)
1 Bald Eagle (adult)
8 Mallard Ducks (5 M, 3 F)
5 Ring-billed Gulls
Good Birding,
Alex Robbins
Fairfax Station, VA
