VA Birders,
Yesterday, Saturday, while Larry McDaniels, Bob Quillen, Ed & Michelle
Talbott, Dexter & Lynda Newman and others manned the hawk watch at Mendota,
myself (Roger Mayhorn) and others tried out a new watch site atop Brumley
Mountain, just a few miles northeast of the Mendota site. Bob Riggs had
noticed that the top of the 4,200 foot mountain had just recently been
cleared, which would make it an ideal site, if the hawks would cooperate.
Dave Worley, Janice Martin, Ed & Barbara Caudill of Grundy, and my wife,
Lynda were all set to see hawks.
The morning hours brought lots of warblers but not many hawks in our
direction, which made it difficult to determine the direction the hawks
would track as they came by our location. It wasn't until later in the day
that we realized that the best area was the opposite side of the mountain
top from which we were observing. Bob Riggs arrived later. We then changed
observation points and started seeing a few more Broadwings.
By evening we had counted 79 BROADWINGS, 6 RED-TAILS, 4 COOPERS,1
SHARP-SHINNED, 1 KESTREL and several resident TURKEY and BLACK VULTURES.
