Saturday morning (Sept 9) I saw a nuthatch on my feeder that was smaller
than the regulars (White-breasted) and had some brown on it. It stayed
there for a few seconds then flew off. But it returned and sat on the
deck rail long enough for me to see it clearly. I am quite sure it was a
Brown-headed Nuthatch. It looked exactly like the picture in my bird
book (Kenn Kaufman). It flew off again and came back just one more time
to the feeder. But I live in the mountains near Roanoke and those birds
are not supposed to be around here. (My daughter used to see a lot of
them when she lived in Florence, SC.) Could I have been mistaken? Do
juvenile WB Nuthatches look any different from the adults?
