Thanks to all who responded to my post. I would love to see the Nuthatch
again but I am not getting my hopes up even though the feeder is right
outside my kitchen window where I do look out a lot.
Here is the description as best as I can remember.
It was a Nuthatch for sure. Had a brown cap, gray back, all white (or
light) below. Smaller than the WB Nuthatch. I got a good side view but
was not able to see a white nape spot. But it was the brown cap that
really caught my eye. Sorry I could not take a picture.
I am quite sure this one was not a Red-Breasted.. It did not have the
black eye stripe nor the buff belly.
The woods behind my house is a mix of hardwood and Virginia pine and the
Jefferson National Forest is less than a mile away as the nuthatch flies.
There is a small grove of pines at the side of my house where the
chickadees hang out.
