I conducted my first survey of the year along the Hike-Bike Trail at Huntley
Meadows (Fairfax County) this morning (9 April). A Brown Thrasher was singing
at the first meadow and a second was located near the platform overlooking the
Central Marsh. I heard 2 Pine Warblers at their traditional spot in the
Virginia Pines near the maintenance building and a third at the entrance to the
Pond Trail. I ran into Ben Jesup in the Main Meadow, who had picked up a 4th
very brightly-colored Pine Warbler in the meadow, as well as a Palm Warbler, a
Chipping Sparrow, and several Rusty Blackbirds. Ruby-crowned Kinglets were
singing at several locations (I had 7) and Ben observed 2 Golden-crowns. I had
a flyover Sharpie in the Main Meadow and a Red-shouldered Hawk in the Central
Marsh. There appears to be still surprisingly few crows- I had 2 vocalizing
Americans and 1 Fish, while Ben had 4 silent crow sp. There was a Flicker
convention going on around the plarform at the Central Marsh- Ben tallied a
dozen at this location.
