[va-bird] Broad-wing, Parulas near Emporia

On 12 May on Creek Road south of where it crosses Fountain's Creek, I found
only Parula Warblers singing at 6AM. This is the only spot I can find which
might have had Ceruleans on the atlas.

Some weeks ago I was not sure if I might have heard two Ceruleans or
Black-throated Greens there, later in the day. This time, the singers are
definitely Parulas.

At Brink, on 12 May, about 10 AM, west of the southernmost Emporia I-95
exit, a Broad-winged Hawk with prey soared at and glided away from the
Ruritan Club southwest. This was surprsingly open habitat for the
species---mostly lawn. The bird was headed for woods.
Broad-wings are rare in the area, but were found on the atlas project. (I
was surprised at how much the hawk resembled a crow against an dark overcast
sky. I was trying to make this soaring "crow" into a Raven, when a wide
white tailband appeared in my bins. I will have to check out more crows
more carefully.)

The road going south at Brink (Rock Bridge Road?) must be on an old railroad
bed about 1.5 miles; the huge (1' DBH) trees along the roadway seems to
provide a good vantage point from which to see songbirds, even in the
second- or third-growth trees 60 feet below the assumed railroad bed.

Hooded Mergs were not to be seen in the heavier rainsquall on the swampy
pond south of the Vulcan quarry.
