Jen Folts and I took to the hills today in search of Allen Larner's Ross's
Geese.
Of course they were not where they were supposed to be, but both of his sites
would be worth checking.  We wandered down the road a bit from the pond
where the birds have been seen and were lucky enough to find them in a pond,
almost hidden from the road, at a retirement home/village.  This location is
on
Oakwood Lane about a half-mile west of the pond noted by Allen.  The entrance
to the retirement spot has two signs at its entrance, one on the left, the
other
on the right, "Oakwood Villa" and "White Birch Estates".  We drove right in,
going straight ahead to the pond, where the birds were hanging out with the
local lowlife, i.e., Canadas, Mallards, barn duckies and 2 Mute Swans.  We had
good looks in good light at the end of the little road.  They did manage to go
out of sight right under the near bank of the pond and stayed there, after we
had admired them for some  5-10 minutes.  Cute little fellers!
On the way home (more or less) we had an umsuccessful look for the Brewer's
Blackbirds in Nokesville, and a very brief stop at Chez Catterton for the R/A
hummer was likewise a bummer.

BTW the exit from I 81 is signposted for Bridgewater College, but Mount Solon
is
actually something else (the name escapes me).  It's the exit after the last
exit for Harisonburg.
