Just a follow up to Laura Catterton's message about the Brewer's
Blackbirds today. I was originally there about 12:15 and Laura joined
me about 20 minutes later. I returned to the spot we had been looking
at them about an hour later (~1:30) and there were only a few starlings
around. It seems you have to catch them at the right time or just wait
around. When I first arrived at the spot, there were only cowbirds in
the muddy ruts created by the cows. I waited around a bit and then a
flock of starlings came in. I started scoping through them and still
didn't see any Brewer's for a while. The birds walk in and out of the
ruts in the mud and are at times hard to see. My advice to anyone
wanting to see these birds is to be patient and if you don't see them,
return to the spot an hour or so later and see if they have returned.
The church Laura mentioned is an excellent spot to view the farm though
possibly not on Sunday morning as the parking lot may be full. I spoke
to the farmer yesterday and he seems pretty friendly though I think he
thought I was a bit odd for wanting to look at blackbirds in the snow!
