This is a second call to invite Virginia Birders to participate in the
annual breeding bird foray to be held in the beautiful counties of Bath and
Highland from June 7-15. These two sparsely populated counties have over
one dozen mountain peaks above 4000 ft, which harbor breeders such as Winter
Wren, Black-capped Chickadee, four species of Catharus thrush, warblers such
as Mourning, Yellow-rumped, Canada, Blackburnian, Golden-winged and Northern
Waterthrush, and possibly Saw-whet Owl. The open valleys regularly yield
Bobolinks. Alder Flycatcher is possible and there is a good chance of
finding breeding evidence of Loggerhead Shrike.
We have divided this foray into two parts, the first concentrating on
Highland County from June 7-10 and the second focusing on Bath County from
June 12-15, with June 11 being a transition day. Participation does not
require commitment to the entire survey period; folks can do as many or few
days as they like. The foray headquarters for Highland County will be a
small farm house, the Wilson House, located approximately 7 miles outside of
Monterey. The Warm Springs Inn will serve as headquarters for the Bath
County segment.
Approximately 50 birders, including some of Virginia's finest, have so far
signed on to help and we can use more. If you are interested and/or want
