Birders,

Dorothy Tella and I spent the morning at Riverbend Park in Great Falls. The
meadow was fairly quiet except for multitudes of White-crowned Sparrows, a
good number of Song Sparrows, a single Field Sparrow, a single Fox Sparrow,
a Brown Thrasher, and an Osprey overhead. An Eastern Phoebe sang loudly near
the Nature Center, while an immature Red-shouldered Hawk consumed his prey
atop a snag in the woods. A pair of Pileated Woodpeckers kept flashing
through the tree trunks. We ventured down to the rushing torrent that was
the Potomac, found the trail flooded, and then drove to the Visitor Center
to see if perhaps anything was brave enough to set down in the raging brown
water. Several Double-crested Cormorants flew overhead, and Tree Swallows
swirled above the river. Approximately 100 Bonaparte's Gulls bobbed in the
water pecking at it like chickens. Amazingly, a pair of Buffleheads landed
and floated downriver very quickly. It was great to be out in the midst of
the effects of yesterday's deluge.
