[va-bird] Bobolinks/Clarke Co.

Prompted by Dave Carr's post of May 27, on the way home from Shenandoah NP, I
drove along Clarke CR 624 to check for Bobolinks as
well as Dickcissels. The latter were not found, but I found plenty of
Bobolinks. In all, I saw and heard a total of at least 8
birds, maybe more.

At one point, there was a group of 6 males in the air chasing 1 female (how's
that for bad odds? - unless you're the female, of
course), while at the same time, a single male was still singing from the stalk
of a tall thistle. There may well be more birds in
the area that I couldn't count.

Also right there, were a lot of displaying Meadowlarks - there were 7 sitting
along a fenceline in a very short span - at one time,
while others were flying and singing.

The birds I found were on property that is part of Historic Longbranch, just
south of Hwy 50. If anyone wants specific directions,
please write me back-channel.

Although the birds were a few miles north of the place that Dave described, at
least they seem to have found a new home. I certainly
hope that the management of Longbranch will maintain the habitat in the
condition that it is. It obviously suits the birds.
